The temple was visited by Guru Rinpoche during his visit to Bumthang and was renovated by Sindhu Raja a king in Bhutan) after Guru Rinpoche restored his life force. Under the temple there is said to be a lake in which Guru Rinpoche hid several Terma.

Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo ((601–683 Tibetan king and the founder of the Tibetan Empire. The first of three Dharma Kings of Tibet, he formally introduced Buddhism to Tibet and built the Jokhang with the influence of his queen Bhrikuti, of Nepal’s Licchavi dynasty.

Kurjey Lhakhang that is named after body print of Guru Rinpoche, built in 1652 by Minjur Tempa.

It is said that the king at the time, Sindu Raja, was ill. Guru Rinpoche appeared as normal monk and cured him.

It is also rumoured that Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo told the Tibetan ministers to make a Dorje Drolo statue to avoid invasion. They laughed at him and didn’t do so. The Bhutanese king however took this advice seriously and erected a Dorje Drolo statue and hence possibly a reason Bhutan wasn’t invaded.
