Buddhism was started in Bhutan in 1213 by Sonam Kagyu Drikung Shipu

Sakyamuni Statue 51,5m high (including the base is around 102 meters high). There was a prophecy that if it was built it would bring world peace. The site to construct was chosen according to a place where there was previously a temple (possibly of Dorje Lingpa). When they started excavation they found a Sakyamuni Buddha statue hidden by Guru Rinpoche. Excavation started in 2004 last year of reign of the 4th king)

Guru Rinpoche and Yeshe Tsogyal meditated here for a few months. It is said Guru Rinpoche subdued evil spirits here whom had been harming the locals at that time
